    European Cetacean Society Conference 2026

Every year the European Cetacean Society organises a conference that brings together researchers, practictioners, and marine mammal enthusiasts for an exchange on the latest scientific findings and advances. The 37th annual ECS conference was held in Dundee, Scotland from 22 to 24 April 2026.

The theme of the conference was “Basics to Benefits”, highlighting not only the importance of fundamental science, but also how these insights can be translated into meaningful conservation action.

Odyssea president, Dr Anna Schleimer, took the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and collaborators, while also laying the groundwork for exciting new projects ahead.

A special highlight was seeing Prof. Phil Hammond, Anna’s former PhD supervisor, receive the prestigious Mandy McMath Conservation Award, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to marine mammal science.

    Odyssea at ECS conference

From the 1st to 3rd of May, the annual conference of the European Cetacean Society took place in Middelfart, Denmark. The event allows marine mammal researchers, students and enthusiasts to present their latest study results, discuss current issues, and, of course, to catch up with their colleagues from across the globe. Odyssea participated also this year and 2 of our researchers, Amandine Gillet and Anna Schleimer, presented results from their PhDs as posters. Anna received the best postgraduate student poster award for her study on modelling fin whale habitat in the Gulf of St Lawrence. Next year’s conference will be held in La Spezia, Italy!
